    About This Tool

This page provides original, human-reviewed information about detecting Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft 365 mail environments, explaining autodiscover hints, MX patterns, and what the results mean for migration and integration projects.

    What is Microsoft Exchange?

Microsoft Exchange Server is a mail server and calendaring server developed by Microsoft. It runs exclusively on Windows Server operating systems and provides email, calendar, contacts, and task management capabilities.

    Key Exchange Services:

    • Autodiscover:Automatically configures email clients with server settings
    • Exchange Web Services (EWS):API for accessing Exchange data programmatically
    • SMTP/IMAP/POP3:Standard email protocols for sending and receiving messages
    • ActiveSync:Mobile device synchronization protocol

    Exchange Deployment Types:

    On-Premises Exchange

Self-hosted Exchange servers managed by your organization

    Exchange Online (Office 365)

Cloud-hosted Exchange service managed by Microsoft

    Exchange Autodiscover Service

Autodiscover is a service that automatically provides configuration information to email clients. It eliminates the need for users to manually configure server settings in their email applications.

    How Autodiscover Works:

    1. Email client extracts domain from user's email address
    2. Client attempts to connect to various Autodiscover URLs
    3. Server responds with XML configuration data
    4. Client automatically configures email settings

    Common Autodiscover URLs:

    https://autodiscover.domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
    https://domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
    https://autodiscover.domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.svc
Autodiscover requires proper DNS configuration and SSL certificates for secure operation.
    Exchange Web Services (EWS)

Exchange Web Services (EWS) is a web service API that enables applications to access Exchange server data. It provides programmatic access to email, calendar, contacts, and tasks.

    EWS Capabilities:

    • Send, receive, and manage email messages
    • Access and modify calendar appointments
    • Manage contacts and distribution lists
    • Handle tasks and to-do items
    • Access public folders and shared mailboxes

    EWS Endpoint Examples:

    Exchange Online
    https://outlook.office365.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx
    On-Premises Exchange
    https://mail.company.com/EWS/Exchange.asmx
EWS requires authentication and proper permissions. Modern applications should considerusing Microsoft Graph API instead of EWS for new developments.
    Exchange Connectivity Troubleshooting

    Autodiscover Failures

Autodiscover service not responding or returning incorrect configuration.

    Solutions:

    • Verify DNS records for autodiscover.domain.com
    • Check SSL certificate validity
    • Ensure IIS and Exchange services are running
    • Review Exchange virtual directory settings

    EWS Connection Issues

Unable to connect to Exchange Web Services endpoint.

    Solutions:

    • Verify EWS virtual directory is enabled
    • Check authentication methods (Basic, NTLM, OAuth)
    • Ensure proper firewall and proxy configuration
    • Test with Exchange Remote Connectivity Analyzer

    SMTP Authentication Problems

SMTP server rejecting authentication or connection attempts.

    Solutions:

    • Verify SMTP authentication is enabled
    • Check TLS/SSL configuration
    • Ensure correct port usage (587 for submission, 25 for relay)
    • Review Exchange receive connector settings

    Certificate Issues

SSL/TLS certificate problems affecting secure connections.

    Solutions:

    • Ensure certificate includes all required SANs
    • Verify certificate is not expired
    • Check certificate chain and root CA trust
    • Assign certificate to Exchange services
For detailed troubleshooting, use Microsoft's Remote Connectivity Analyzer at https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com to test Exchange connectivity.
